Principals Visit Panmure Bridge School

A group of 6 leaders created a LS2 learning showcase to present our work to a group of principals looking to join manaiakalani. I chose to present the Matariki starts, I talked about the paper mache stars of tupuanuku and tupuarangi, and then showed them around. Me and Taya took 2 people and started by showing them the LS blocks, then the juniors and finally Room 6&7.

I enjoyed this because they complimented our work and asked many questions.

Order of Operations

For maths we are learning how to do B.E.D.M.A.S for order of operations. BEDMAS stands for: Brackets, Exponents,Division & Multiplication, Addition & Subtraction. This is the order you must do when solving a problem like the one in the image above.

I found this interesting because when I first saw problems with brackets I was worried, but now I know how to solve them.

LS2 Swimming

Every Thursday LS2 goes to the indoor Pools to learn swimming skills and life saving techniques. In the image above you will see us doing a freestyle race to practice our speed and skill. My group was split into 2 smaller groups and we raced against each other, when it was my turn to race I was at the same speed as the person I was competing with. In the end we ended up tying.

I enjoyed this session of swimming because I got to practice my freestyle swimming tenique.

Ancient Olympics Kahoot

LI: to recall our knowledge on the ancient olympics at speed.

We were challenged to create a Kahoot based off our knowledge on the Ancient Olympics. First we read around the room which was looking at all the ancient Olympic presentations and wrote questions we could ask eachother. One of our questions were: why did the ancient olympics start? We then turned all of our questions into a Google form, then converted our quiz to Kahoot so we could test each other’s knowledge on the ancient olympics in a fun way.

I enjoyed this task because we were able to recall and test our knowledge on the Ancient Olympics in a fun way!

Tivaevae Design

We were challenged to create a tivaevae design to celebrate Cook Island language week. To create my Tivaevae design, I did some research and looked at many different designs. I saw that all of them had flowers, so I decided to add hibiscus flowers since they are common in the cook islands. One of the rules for a tivaevae designs is that is must be symmetrical. So I drew one side then copied it and flipped it over. I carefully thought about what colours and gradients I should use to make my design look realistic.

I enjoyed this activity because I got to use my creativity to create my own tivaevae design.

Persuasive Language Features

LI: to explore the language features of a persuasive text.

This term we have been learning about persuasive writing to help us get ready for the school speech competition later on in this term. Persuasive writing is used when you want to change other peoples opinion to make them think like you. Yesterday we were looking closely at the language features used in a persuasive text. I have chosen to share the persuasive language feature of acknowledge counter arguments. I think authors use this language feature to make the reader think about both perspectives.

2 Words 2 Minutes

Today we used the ‘2 words 2 minute’ challenge to write a text about the ancient olympics. After revising what we knew about the ancient olympics already, we selected 2 important words that would help us write our description. We chose the words ‘Greece’ and ‘athletes’ to help us think about what we were going to write.

We discussed our ideas with a partner, then we had 2 minutes to put those ideas into sentences. After the time was up we had 2 minutes to reread what we had written and make changes, if anything didn’t make sense or if we had words and punctuation in the wrong place. When we finished checking we had 2 more minutes to finish off our texts.

This activity was fun because I haven’t used this strategy of writing before.

Reading: Born to Run

LI: To make connections (self, text, world)

LI: To identify the main ideas – negotiation game

LI: To make inferences about the events in the text using the clues provided by the author.

LI: To practise skimming and scanning by looking for key words in the text when answering questions

Our guided reading text was Born to Run, this text was about Arthur Lydiard. We worked collaboratively as a group to unpack the text and answer questions using evidence from the text to support our thinking. All our responses were written in the comments tool, and we asked each other questions so we could respond to them.

Something I found interesting about this text was how as a coach he gave everyone the same amount of training because usually people think less of women than men in sports.

Ancient Greek Olympics Research Challenge

LI: To use our smart searching skills to help us explore the Ancient Olympic games

LI: To work collaboratively in groups as an active participant and contributor

Our challenge was to work in groups to carry out a mini collaborative inquiry presentation about the ancient Greek olympic games. We used smart searching skills to help us answer the questions. Our group worked well. Something I found interesting was that the only thing women could do in the ancient Olympics was train the horses but not participate in riding them during the competition.
